CNN —Two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić led the way for the Denver Nuggets in their 120-108 victory over the lowly Portland Trail Blazers to bring the defending champions within half a game of the No. Denver ran out to a big early lead, outscoring Portland 33 to 20 in the first quarter, but the Trail Blazers fought back in the second. The two teams then traded the lead until the Nuggets pulled ahead by four at the half. Jokić said afterwards he was pleased that the Nuggets are still hungry for more success this season. CNN —Oregon leaders joined forces to declare a 90-day state of emergency in downtown Portland, funneling resources into the city’s deadly fentanyl crisis. Oregon voters passed Measure 110 in 2020, which decriminalized some use of hard-drugs, including fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. The measure has received criticism, as opioid overdose deaths steadily climbed since. Opioid overdose deaths in the state increased from 280 in 2019 to 956 in 2022, according to the state’s data. Experts say reversing the trends in overdose deaths really depends on broader access to and use of treatments for opioid use disorder.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Several elected leaders in Oregon declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for downtown Portland over the public health and public safety crisis fueled by fentanyl. The declaration is a recommendation from a governor-established task force that met for several months last year to determine ways to rejuvenate downtown Portland. The effort also extends the Portland Police Bureau’s partnership with Oregon State Police to jointly patrol downtown streets for fentanyl sales. At the state level, Oregon lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would undo a key part of the state’s drug decriminalization law. Public opinion has soured on it as public drug use has become more visible because of growing homelessness.

The NewsThe union representing teachers, counselors and other school employees in Portland, Ore., reached a tentative deal with the city's public school district on Sunday, ending a strike that has kept nearly 45,000 students out of classes for more than three weeks in Oregon’s largest district. That is about in the middle of what the district had offered and what the union had asked for at the start of the strike. The strike has drawn attention to public school funding in Oregon. (Minneapolis students missed 14 school days during a strike last year.) The strike, which kept students out of school for nearly the entire month of November, could risk amplifying that message in Portland.

To the Editor:Re “A Drug User’s ‘Paradise’” (Science Times, Aug. 1):Portland, Ore., is not a drug user’s paradise. The citizens of Portland who voted in favor of Measure 110 understood this to be an approach that would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs and direct revenue from marijuana sales to fund drug treatment and recovery services. Drug treatment is not a “soft” option. It is a rigorous, structured process that addresses the underlying issues of a person’s addiction, including trauma, mental illness and medical concerns. When operated by trained staff, with the provision of medication-assisted treatment, primary health care services, and connections to jobs and housing, treatment is the most effective solution.

To the Editor:Re “A Homeless Crisis Is a Test of Portland’s Identity” (front page, July 29):Your article about homeless problems in Portland, Ore., was a slap in the face to a great city that is actually having a renaissance. This became a great city because people here cared about community, historic preservation and good city planning. I have been walking downtown for the past three years and have rarely felt uncomfortable. We have vibrant museums and Portland State University. Thousands attended the Starlight Parade in June, and downtown is often filled with people enjoying themselves.

A home that was a fixture of Bobby Fouther’s childhood is now a parking lot, the two-story, shingle-sided house having been demolished in the 1970s along with many other properties in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. In 1934, Fouther’s great-aunt and her husband bought a house, which he and his sister visited almost daily, in the Albina neighborhood of Portland, according to the lawsuit. A total of 32 business and four church or community organizations were also destroyed, according to the lawsuit. They were not fairly compensated and in some cases not compensated at all, according to the lawsuit. Many of the plaintiffs’ homes, if they had not been destroyed, would have been worth more than $500,000 today, the lawsuit says.
“We’re seeing forms of stress in all of our species of trees,” said Christine Buhl, a forest entomologist with the Oregon Department of Forestry. Trained observers peer outside both sides of the plane, looking for noticeable damage to trees. “You definitely have to have a stomach of steel.”This year, the aerial observation program flew over about 69 million acres of Washington and Oregon forest in about 246 hours. Oregon’s average temperatures have risen about 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895, according to a 2021 state climate assessment delivered to the state’s Legislature. “It was the combination of the high temperatures in the afternoon with the sun boring down,” said Chris Still, a professor in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University.
CNN —Rhian Wilkinson has resigned as the head coach of the Portland Thorns FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) at the request of the players following her “friendship” with a player, she said Friday. “During my time as the Thorns coach, a player and I formed a friendship that turned into more complex emotions,” Wilkinson wrote on Twitter. “The Portland Thorns and Coach Wilkinson followed all League processes and policies and fully cooperated with this investigation,” NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman said in a statement posted on Portland’s website. “The investigative process and player and staff willingness to use human resources and league reporting is critically important,” Wilkinson tweeted. Wilkinson led the club to a 10-3-9 record and Portland’s league-best third championship in her only season as head coach.
CNN —The Portland Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current to win the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League championship on Saturday. The 2-0 victory at the Audi Field in Washington DC gives the Thorns their third championship in team history. Portland had an early lead during Saturday’s game with Thorns striker Sophia Smith scoring the first goal four minutes into the match. The 22-year-old Smith became the youngest regular-season MVP in NWSL history this season. In the second half, Kansas City’s Addisyn Merrick netted an own goal to extend Portland’s lead.
Dangerous drugs and violent crime are plaguing the state of Pennsylvania. At a roundtable discussion with community members in Germantown, another Philadelphia neighborhood, I heard numerous stories of individuals losing loved ones to violent crime. Fetterman has made clear his support for Oregon’s measure 110, which decriminalized drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. Measure 110 has also been linked to a massive increase in violent crime. The crisis ravaging vulnerable communities like Kensington results from ineffective drug policies pushed by elected officials who care more about caring than fixing.
Portland, Ore.Masked antifa gangsters, armed with crowbars, smashed their way through Portland’s Bison Coffeehouse’s windows on Oct. 5. The vandals were angry that the owner, Loretta Guzman , was planning to hold a “Coffee With a Cop” event—an opportunity for residents to chat with officers patrolling their neighborhood. That Ms. Guzman is a Native American who approaches her business with a slightly mystical Portlandian leftism bought her no sympathy from the radicals. “Then the tables and benches and my work area, everything.” She adds, “Right now a lot of people are scared. Other people supported me, other small businesses, but they don’t want me to say anything .
